Design Intent

The design stems from a need for stillness and light. Shaped in an octagon, the chapel brings everyone closer to the altar, fostering a sense of togetherness during prayer. Every detail, from its earthy materials to the scale of its openings, was guided by the intent to create a sacred yet humble atmosphere that complements the timeless character of the convent.

• Centralised Octagonal Plan: Positions the congregation around a central altar for an intimate, inclusive liturgy.
• Clerestory Windows: Eight-sided sloping roof with clerestory brings vertical shafts of morning and evening light that enhance the spiritual ambience.
• Stained-Glass Openings: Small pivoted stained-glass windows in the side walls and door create soft, coloured light and controlled ventilation.
• Veranda Link: A sheltered veranda connects the chapel directly to the existing convent, ensuring easy access and continuity with the campus.
• Simple Sacristy: A compact sacristy within the altar supports liturgical needs without compromising the chapel's modest scale.

Material Palette

• Foundation & Walls: Stone foundation and brick walls in rat-trap bond for insulation and material efficiency.
• Roofing: Steel truss roof with reused Mangalore tiles for durability and thermal comfort.
• Joinery: Reclaimed timber doors and pivoted windows fitted with stained glass for soft, diffused light.
• Brick Detailing: Exposed brick corbels, arches, niches, and pivoted brick columns reflect local craftsmanship.

Functional Layout

• Octagonal Plan: Altar placed on one side of the octagon opposite the main entrance; seating oriented toward it.
• Veranda Link: Direct connection to the convent for easy access.
